比較標題中clothing一字及clothes與cloth的不同: |
a. clothing n. 衣服 (不可數名詞) clothing是不可數名詞, 雖然中文說『一件衣服』、『兩件衣服』……, 但英文卻不能說"a clothing" 、"two clothings"...。在英文中, 上衣與褲子是分的開開的, 此時表上衣與褲子的名詞才是可數名詞。 上衣: jacket 夾克 a jacket (一件夾克)、two jackets (兩件夾克)…… coat 外套 a coat (一件外套)、two coats (兩件外套)…… shirt 襯衫 a shirt (一件襯衫)、two shirts (兩件襯衫)…… blouse 女式襯衫; 圓領罩衫 a blouse (一件女襯衫)、two blouses (兩件女襯衫)…… 褲子: 由於褲子都有兩條褲管, 所以表示褲子的字都用複數形, 而表『一條褲子』、『兩條褲子』……的單位則要用"a pair of" 、"two pairs of"...來表示。 trousers 褲子 (= pants) a pair of trousers (一條褲子)、two pairs of trousers (兩條褲子)…… a pair of pants (一條褲子)、two pairs of pants (兩條褲子)…… 以上不管是上衣或褲子均統稱為clothing, 故clothing是不可數名詞。可說a lot of clothing、some clothing, 卻不可說five clothings、many clothings。 例: She has a lot of clothing in her closet. b. clothes n. 衣服 (恆用複數形) clothes也是『衣服』的意思, 但和clothing不同的是, clothes始終要用複數。且clothes亦是不可數名詞, 我們除了可說some clothes, a lot of clothes外, 還可說many clothes, 因為many之後要接複數名詞, 所以many clothes是正確的, 但我們不能說many clothings, 因為clothing無複數形。 例: I want to buy some clothes. (○) (我想去買些衣服。) He has many clothing. (╳) →He has many clothes. (○) (他有很多衣服。) He doesn't have much clothing. (○) (他沒有很多衣服。)
c. cloth n. 布 (不可數名詞) cloth (布) 也是不可數名詞, 表『一塊布』要說a piece of cloth; 表『若干布』要說some cloth; 表『許多布』則要說a lot of cloth。 例: I always wipe the floor with an old piece of cloth. (我向來都是用舊布擦地板。)
