Studies show that those containing DEET are most effective. Depending on the brand of repellent, the chemical keeps mosquitoes at bay for 5 to 13 hours. Some plant oils can be used instead of DEET, but they require more frequent application—every two hours—and in greater concentrations. Oils such as lemon eucalyptus or citronella are two possibilities. Another chemical, permethrin, can be applied to clothing to ward off mosquitoes. The chemical sticks to the fabric and will last through a few washings. Clothing that has been factory-treated with the chemical is also available. The manufacturers say that it will retain the permethrin for about 70 washings. Mosquito coils also keep mosquitoes away. However the smoke from them pollutes and can damage the lungs, so they should be used with care. When you’re inside, simply plugging in some fans will keep mosquitoes away as they are weak fliers. Everyone wants to avoid mosquito bites, so try several methods to see what works for you.
